My first encounter with Two Moms in the Raw happened on the campus of Emory University. I was visiting the school with my parents during my senior year of high school, and we were standing in the Starbucks on the college’s campus when I noticed a basket filled with bars. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the bits and pieces of nuts and berries. I didn’t buy the bar that day (as I was quickly ushered out of the coffee shop because we were almost late for our campus tour), but I didn’t forget about the company. Now, roughly three years later, Two Moms in the Raw have undergone some serious transformations in not only the look but also the taste of their products. I was given the opportunity to try a few of their treats for this post! (What follows is entirely my honest opinion.) The company started soon after Shari (the founder) was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and discovered that eating raw foods worked best for her. When her friends and family confessed their love of her treats, Two Moms in the Raw was born. All of the company’s products are organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, Kosher, vegan, and (of course!) raw. Raw simply means that the food has “not been cooked or exposed to temperatures over 118°” (from company’s website). Two Moms also soaks and germinates most of their ingredients for maximum nutrition and optimal digestion. I tried their Charming Cherry Chocolate Bar, Cranberry Crush Nut Bar, Bring on the Blueberry Granola, and their new Zesty Italian Herb Almond Protein Crackers. I enjoyed the Cherry Chocolate Bar because of the huge pieces of crunchy nuts that contrasted with the chewy cherries, but I didn’t get a lot of chocolate flavor, which would have made the bar even better. What’s amazing about the bar is the 6 grams of protein! The Blueberry Granola comes in the shape of a thinner sized bar, and reminds of me of the flavor of their Goji Berry bar (the first of their products I ever tasted). The Cranberry Crush bar didn’t have much cranberry flavor, but I was able to really taste the raw flavor of each of the nuts that make up the bar, especially the whole walnuts! (You never see walnuts in a nut bar!)
Unfortunately, I wasn’t a fan of the Zesty Italian Herb crackers. I’m a fanatic about the concept of the almond protein crackers (I really would love to try their Sweet on You Graham Crackers), but this particular flavor had an intense oregano taste that didn’t sit well with me. I love Two Moms in the Raw because their products look like the stereotypical healthy, vegan, raw food that people not accustomed to eating this way would automatically assume tastes like dirt and leaves. But the masterminds behind these bars actually know how to blend flavors and pack a product with incredibly nutritious ingredients. I’ve got my eye on the Cayenne Cacao Nut Butter Truffle.
